“We have a plan,” Trae said, smoothing a weathered brown map across the cracked alehouse table.
A falling log cracked in the fireplace, sending off a shower of sparks and sputters. Somewhere behind the quiet bar the innkeep snored, and overhead the last of the beds had stopped their rhythmic squeaking. For now, they were alone with their plans.
Kinni turned the map to look at the rough terrain dividing them from their goal. “This isn’t a plan.”
“It will be.” Trae took a charred stick and started drawing lines across the map. “We’ll cross on the east under cover of darkness, slip past the outer defenses when they change guards during the first bell of night, and enter during the false dawn. This is victory!”
“Or death.”
Trae shrugged.
“We’ve already lost too many,” Kinni said. “This… is this worth it?”
His friend studied the map with the path over the rocky gorge and along the steep cliffs. “The Fordrakin Guard killed Shay and Jennell. If we don’t do this…” Trae shook his head.
The best spellcaster and necromancer in the living lands were gone, bodies lost to unmarked graves. If the Fordrakin could do that…
Kinni crossed his arms, rubbing away a foreboding chill. “This is risky.”
“Very,” Trae agreed.
“When do we leave?”
“Now.”
